1 ~ Bodham by Sarah Hatton

I live on a river,
And I watch the universe every day,
There, in the water,
As it flows to the ocean.

…

This cardigan by Sarah Hatton is knitted in Rowan Original Denim. It shows simple textured patterns and a shawl collar.

Saw it, loved it.

…

I watch the flow of the universe.
I see how the dust is caught up,
The chemicals assembled,
The forms put together,
Man-made or nature-made,
It is all the same!

For man is only a sub-contractor
For God.
He puts out some of his work,
And pays, not by the hour, nor by the year,
But on the basis of motive.

I see the movement of the planet,
This little electron swinging in its atom
With the sun for a nucleus,
And I marvel that men are so blind
That they cannot see that all outward things
Are on the move.

There is nothing still,
Nothing that does not flow as surely as this river.
The outward world is simply the energy of God
Made manifest in time and space.

And whether we know it or not,
We all live on a river.
Pavements, perhaps, instead of rushes.
The wild forget-me-nots gone,
And a block of flats where the Mimulus-might-have-been;
But it is a river just the same,
Cement, or steel, plastic or plasterboard,
City or mountain, slum, suburb, or Ascot,

It is a river flowing to the Eternal,
Out of the invisible,
Into Time and Space,
And back to the Invisible.

I live on a River by Derek Neville

2 ~ Felbrigg by Carlo Volpi

(Remembering R.W.K-C.)

Families have no beginning, but can end
Though 350 armigerous years
Brighten the vellum. But life may descend
Obliquely, and a score of Norfolk squires
Are summed up here into a fresh dimension
That can progenerate outside the reach
Of county gossip and outlive the plantation
Of those long woods of Spanish chestnut and beech.
For a while over his arable and pasture
The rooks come idling home. The piled clouds grow
And fade this late October afternoon.
Here in his great library, ill and slow,
He leans between his lamp and the young moon,
Become the elements of more than nature.

4 ~ Leiston by Marie Wallin

There was a youth, and a well belov’d youth,
And he was a esquire’s son,
He loved the bailiff’s daughter dear,
That lived in Islington.

She was coy, and she would not believe
That he did love her so,
No, nor at any time she would
Any countenance to him show.

But when his friends did understand
His fond and foolish mind,
They sent him up to fair London,
An apprentice for to bind.

And when he had been seven long years,
And his love he had not seen,
“Many a tear have I shed for her sake
“When she little thought of me.”

All the maids of Islington
Went forth to sport and play,
All but the bailiff’s daughter,
She secretly stole away.

…

…

She put off her gown of gray,
And put on her puggish attire.
She’s up to fair London gone
Her true love to require.

As she went along the road,
The weather being hot and dry,
There was she  aware of her true love,
At length came riding by.

She stepped to him as red as any rose,
And took him by the bridle ring:
“I pray you, kind sir, give me one penny,
To ease my weary limb.”

“I prithee, sweet heart, canst thou tell me
Whether thou  dost know
The bailiff’s daughter of Islington?”
“She’s dead, sir, long ago.”

“Then I will sell my goodly steed,
My saddle and my bow;
I will unto some far countree
Where no man doth me know.”

“O stay, O stay, thou goodly youth,
She’s alive, she is not dead;
Here she standeth by thy side,
And is ready to be thy bride.”

“O farewell grief, and welcome joy,
Ten thousand times and more,
For now I have seen my own true love
That I tho’t I should have seen no more.”

5 ~ Morston by Martin Storey

Into this muddy coastline
the North Sea seeps silently
twice a day
under the kestrel’s weather eye

in the growing puddles
gulls drill the marsh
for nothing we can see
or screech their territory
like fishwives
from the tops of poles

even in August
the sky drowns us
in small drops
settling on hair and eyes
wanting us flying in it
or grovelling in the ooze
at the water’s edge

I died in this country
and came back
to pay my debts
to its wetlands

something fishes me
all the way
back to where it began

and is beginning again
down the years
with a million denials.

7 ~ Ludham by Lisa Richardson

As on the highway’s quiet edge
He mows the grass beside the hedge,
The old man has for company
The distant, grey, salt-smelling sea,
A poppied field, a cow and calf,
The finches on the telegraph.

Across his faded back a hone,
He slowly, slowly scythes alone
In silence of the wind-soft air,
With ladies’ bedstraw everywhere,
With whitened corn, and tarry poles,
And far-off gulls like risen souls.

8 ~ Glaven by Lisa Richardson

You flow endlessly.
Over you your lights are beautiful—luminous and dark, moving and still, broken and whole.

In summer, columns of light—mottled by leaves.
In winter, the bleak light over farmland, the frosted-grey depth.
Today, in spring, lights dancing in and out of shadow—concealing and revealing.

In your course you are infinitely changing—neither crooked nor straight.
You fit your banks.
Running you are beautiful—slow in the deep pools—vociferous and fast in the shallows.

In private land you are hidden.
In public land you are open.
Beneath bridges you reflect back the faces of watchers.

In winter, you fill with water and become clouded.
You race between alders, pound through sluices, tumble over fords.
You wear a sullen expression.

In summer, you slow up and become limpid.
You display your weed in long floating trails.
You glitter past grazing cattle.

Then after long concealment your fish  appear—sparkling-sided, melting and merging, vanishing and visible.

This design by Lisa Richardson is knitted using Rowan Pure Linen and Rowan Creative Linen. It shows an interesting braid pattern on both front and back and also the sleeves. The cables are knitted holding one strand of both yarns together, whereas the background is knitted in Pure Linen alone.

Rowan Knitting & Crochet Magazine 59

Rowan Knitting & Crochet Magazine 59

After we have had spring temperatures around Christmas, the winter came to Southern Germany yesterday and it started to snow. Today Rowan is releasing its new Knitting & Crochet Magazine for the Spring/Summer season 2016, what a lucky coincidence. An early notification on warmer, sunnier days.

This magazine is showing the top trends of the next season in two different stories. It contains 36 designs for women and men

Let’s have a look at the two main stories of this magazine.

Coastal

Boats at Morston Quay

Boats at Morston Quay

This collection of transeasonal designs for both men and women is inspired by coastal living and traditional guernseys. The essence of the seaside flows throughout this story. Deep creams, pale blues and deeper, watery tones are used for garments showing texture and cables. Linen, cottons and the popular Original Denim have used for this collection of essential looks of the season.

This collection was photographed at different locations in North Norfolk, UK.

This collection has been photographed at two different locations. The Japanese Garden, Tatten Park, Cheshire and the Japanese Garden, Compton Acres, Dorset.

Like the beautiful vegetation on the set, the colours of this story are floral and bright, alongside more understated, soft tones. Kyoto is an explosion of pretty, feminine pieces. This story is featuring a loose cardigan designed by Dame Zandra Rhodes.
